Matthew B. Johnson focuses his practice on litigation, primarily defending clients against claims brought under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and state credit and collection laws.  He advises clients throughout the nation on litigation and compliance matters.  Prior to joining Moss & Barnett, he gained experience in credit and collection law as the Compliance Director of ACA International, a trade association made up of collectors, creditors and attorneys.  Mr. Johnson also has experience with matters involving the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, as well as other state and federal data privacy laws and regulations.  Mr. Johnson's defense work is creative and goes beyond simple recitation of statutes and case law; he employs an in-depth, innovative approach to provide his clients with a vigorous defense.

Mr. Johnson was the editor and chief author of two books concerning credit and collections law, "A Guide to State Collection Laws" and "A HIPAA Compliance Guide for Business Associates," as well as numerous compliance articles published in Collector Magazine.  He was a contributing author to "A Guide to the Fair Debt Collection Act" and "A Guide to the Fair Credit Reporting Act" and is frequently asked to contribute to The Collectors' Advocate, a publication distributed nationally to collection professionals.

Mr. Johnson is a member of the Hennepin County Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the ABA's Litigation Section.  He is admitted to practice in both the state and federal courts of Minnesota and is a member of ACA International's Members' Attorney Program.
