EVENTS/SEMINARS/PRESENTATIONSUpcoming October 1, 2008 Sheila Engelmeier will be speaking on "The Legalities and Practicalities of Training to Enhance Respect and Avoid Harassment and Discrimination in the Workplace" at the 2008 Employment Law Compliance Summit to be held in Arlington, Virginia. Past August 21, 2008 Sheila Engelmeie presented "What Employers Need to Know to Avoid Getting Sued: Workplace Discrimination Issues Involving the ADA, FMLA, Harassment and More" to more that 75 employer clients of Wells Fargo Insurance's benefits group. The seminar covered, among other things, managing employees to avoid lawsuits, dealing with disabled workers and harassment claims. The seminar was held at the Golden Valley Country Club, Golden Valley, Minnesota. August 18, 2008 Thomas J. Shroyer presented on the topic of "Malpractice and Loss Prevention" at the 3rd Annual MNCPA Practice Management Conference held at the Golden Valley Country Club, Golden Valley, Minnesota. June 11, 2008 Brian T. Grogan spoke at the MSBA 2008 Communications Law Forum. Brian spoke on "Cable and Telecommunications Access to Residential Multiple Dwelling Units." June 10, 2008 Arthur J. Glassman presented the "Basics of Estate Planning" at the Pre-Retirement Planning Seminar sponsored by the Hennepin County Human Resources Department/Benefits Unit, held at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis. Art presents the "Basics of Estate Planning" for the Hennepin County Human Resources Department on a quarterly basis. June 7-15, 2008 Moss & Barnett sponsored the Great River Energy Bicycle Festival for 2008 held at various locations throughout the state of Minnesota. June 5-6, 2008 Sheila Engelmeier presented "Developing Issues in Sexual Harassment Law: What is "Severe or Pervasive" Enough to Create a Hostile Work Environment?," "Training after Faragher and Ellerth, What is Good Enough?" and "Contending with Stereotypes in the Courtroom: Strategies for Jury Selection in Employment Cases" at the 41st Annual Pacific Coast Labor & Employment Law Conference at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. June 5, 2008 Paralegal Nicole M. Foley chaired the Minnesota Paralegal Association's 2008 Annual Convention held at 3 Appletree Square in Bloomington. June 4, 2008 Curtis D. Smith presented "ConsensusDOCS - Review of Important Provisions" at the Women Construction Owners & Excutives, USA reception in St. Paul. June 3, 2008 Susanne J. Fischer and Michael E. Gerould spoke to members of the Minnesota Recruiting Staffing Association on the topic of "Diversity in the Workplace." May 29 - 30, 2008 Sheila Engelmeier presented "Effectively Executing the Termination Process: A Step-by-Step Guide" at the Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute held at the Saint Paul River Centre. May 22, 2008 Ben M. Henschel, Susan C. Rhode, James J. Vedder and Edward L. Winer each prepared separate chapters for The Family Law Financial Deskbook and presented at a Continuing Legal Education program held at the CLE Center located in the City Center in Downtown Minneapolis. The Family Law Financial Deskbook is a one-stop resource for researching and understanding the financial aspects of divorce. Edward L. Winer and James J. Vedder prepared a chapter titled "Financial Issues In Antenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements." This chapter provides a useful description of existing case law and reasons why a party may want an antenuptial and/or postnuptial agreement. Susan C. Rhode prepared a chapter titled "Spousal Maintenance." This chapter addresses the existing case law and issues parties are likely to experience when spousal maintenance is an issue. Ben M. Henschel prepared a chapter titled "Nonmarital Property." This chapter addresses the case law and various issues litigants need to address when assessing whether a party has a nonmarital claim in a marital dissolution action. May 18-24, 2008 Edward L. Winer served as a Faculty Member for the American Bar Association's Family Law Trial Advocacy Institute held in Denver, Colorado. The ABA Section of Family Law's Trial Advocacy Institute is the premier trial training program for family law practitioners. May 14, 2008 Thomas J. Shroyer moderated and presented at Lorman Education Services' "Ethics for Accountants" held at the Four Points Sheraton in Minneapolis. Besides moderating, Tom spoke on "Responding to Professional Discipline" and "Ethics Violations in Malpractice Lawsuits." April 24, 2008 Curtis D. Smith presented "Bidding & Negotiating Contracts the ASA Way" at the American Subcontractors Association of Minnesota's "Orientation Breakfast and Educational Program" held at the Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights. April 4-6, 2008 Cass S. Weil volunteered to judge the National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Championship Tournament, held at the Hennepin County Government Center and hosted by Hamline University. April 3, 2008 Brian T. Grogan spoke at the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors 2008 legal policy conference in Washington, D.C. Brian spoke on "The Impact of State Legislation and FCC Regulations On Local Community Programming". April 1, 2008 Ben M. Henschel presented "Basics of Property Division," at the Annual Family Law Institute. March 13, 2008 Cecilia Ray presented on the topic of Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI). The FCC adopted rules that became effective December 8, 2007, and the presentation explained what clients need to do in order to bring themselves into compliance with these regulations. The program was sponsored by MART (Minnesota Association for Rural Telecommunications). March 3, 2008 Susanne J. Fischer presented "Managing Leaves Under the Family Medical Leave Act" to the Human Resources section at the Minnesota Telecom Alliance Annual Conference. Cecilia Ray also presented at this conference on the topic of recent FCC regulations adopted on Local Number Portability. February 29, 2008 Sheila Engelmeier presented "Tough Issues in Managing Employees Without Inviting Lawsuits" at the Sixth Annual Early Childhood Educator's Conference, at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. This conference offers the opportunity to learn about developments in the early childhood arena. February 28, 2008 Curtis D. Smith was a moderator at the American Subcontractors Association of Minnesota's "General Contractor Panel Discussion." February 27-28, 2008 Joseph G. Maternowski participated as an Exhibitor at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCA's) Annual Air, Water and Waste Environmental Conference. The MPCA's Air, Water and Waste Conference, one of the largest annual gatherings of environmental professionals in the State of Minnesota, offers the opportunity to learn about regulatory developments, exchange ideas and meet others who are working in the field. Anthony A. Dorland and Matthew P. Kostolnik also participated at the conference. February 26, 2008 James J. Vedder, Jana Aune Deach and Shannon M. Bixby sponsored the "Bush League's" presentation on Early Neutral Evaluation ("ENE"). The "Bush League" is a group comprised of young family law lawyers and ENE is a program which allows participants in family law cases an opportunity to get a financial or custody evaluation prior to going through a full financial trial or custody evaluation. February 21, 2008 Sheila Engelmeier and Sue Fischer presented "Training To Create a Respectful Work Environment" at the Multicultural Forum on Workplace Diversity, hosted by the University of St. Thomas. This is a conference that is attended by about 1,000 people who are in diversity and human resource management positions. February 7, 2008 Curtis D. Smith presented "Managing the Construction Schedule" and "Managing Project Closeout" at National Business Institute's "Construction Project Management" seminar in Bloomington. |
